Originating a Return

Return Origination is helpful when you are the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) in a transaction. This most often happens in cases when you want to originate a return for an incoming payment (see incoming payment details). For example:

  • The transaction originator sent an erroneous payment
  • An internal account is unexpectedly debited or credited
  • An internal account received an incoming payment for a Virtual Account that is closed
  • You are unable to identify the originator of an incoming payment.

See ACH return codes for more cases in which your bank may originate a return.
