Creating Counterparties

A Counterparty is an individual or business that you will pay or charge through Modern Treasury. Counterparties are associated to External Accounts, which are bank accounts or stablecoin wallets that they own and control.

Counterparties can be linked to Legal Entities. Linking a Counterparty to a Legal Entity enables:

• Payment enrichment — outgoing payment orders automatically populate receiving-party fields (email, phone, date of birth, tax ID) from the Legal Entity.
• Auto-populated defaults — the Counterparty's name and email are set from the Legal Entity if not provided explicitly.
• Dashboard navigation — the Counterparty detail page links to its Legal Entity, and the Legal Entity page lists associated Counterparties.
• API filtering — use GET /counterparties?legal_entity_id=<id> to list all Counterparties linked to a specific Legal Entity.
